Everything you need to know about my photo editing service

What does your editing
service include?

Adobe Lightroom is my thing and I am kinda a guru when it comes to utilising its full editing potential. Lightroom is where you can expect most of the editing magic to happen. It is also how we will share the image catalogs using Smart Previews.

I am also an Adobe-certified Photoshop user, though I keep my use of this software to a minimum. It is primarily used to remove tiny, annoying distractions or to straighten lines in an image.

My bespoke outsourcing service will include the following editing tasks:

  1. Exposure correction

  2. Color correction

  3. Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Blacks, Whites

  4. Line straightening

  5. Noise reduction

  6. Black & white conversion

  7. Light manipulation to remove those tiny, annoying distractions

  8. Camera calibration/ synching between multiple shooters

Do you an ideal client?

I work best with fine art wedding photographers who value quality and close collaboration to achieve their style and business goals. I want to know all about my clients; where do they live, what do they do in their free time, what gets them excited, when is their birthday? When you hire me, you get a friend. If you are looking for an editor where you simply submit the images and get them back, then I’m not for you. There are numerous companies that provide that service and do it well. It is also important to note that I edit exclusively for photographers who shoot either shoot hybrid (film and digital) or prefer a film-like finish applied to their digital images.

My best work is done with photographers who are confident in their photographic technique and have a good idea of the direction they want their brand to go in. I also love photographers who are looking for a strong working partnership with their editor. Open, honest and frequent communication is my game. Hiring a private editor is very different from engaging a big box company. I don't do nameless transactions and genuinely want to know everything about your style vision so I can help you succeed time and time again.

New to film photography and not quite getting the results you hoped for? Being completely honest, you probably aren’t ready to outsource your photo editing quite yet. However, I can still help you! I offer a limited number of mentorship opportunities to help you up your photography game and achieve your style goals.

How do we share
images efficiently?

I'm glad you asked. No doubt you will be shooting hundreds or even thousands of images in RAW format and those files are HUGE! The solution to this problem is Adobe Lightroom Smart Preview. Smart Previews are compressed .dng lossy files that are a fraction of the size of a RAW image. We will share your Smart Preview catalog using Dropbox.

The rate for my bespoke service is .35¢ (USD) per image. Invoices are sent after you approve the final edits. If you become a regular client, then I will be more than happy to set up monthly invoicing. Payment is made via Credit Card or PayPal and is due within 14 business days of an invoice being issued.

Are you based internationally? I can invoice in various currencies including Sterling (£), Euro (€), Canadian $ and AUS $. Get in touch to discuss exchange rates further.

How much do you charge for your editing service?

What is your typical turnaround time?

I don’t have traditional turnaround times. Instead I work with all of my photographers to build a bespoke editing schedule that suits their individual needs. What this means is that every quarter I will sit down with my clients to map out their shooting schedule. We will then discuss film processing times (if needed) and how long it will take them to cull their digital images. Afterwards, I present them with a timetable of when to expect their edited galleries back and we tweak it as needed.

Film scans taking a bit longer to get back? Life making it difficult to find time to cull? I keep my client list small and schedule flexible to allow for the unexpected things that may pop up. Whatever life throws your way, we will work together to get your images back to your clients on time!

What if I am not happy with the edits?

I actively encourage all of my clients to provide me with open and honest feedback and am happy to provide further edits as needed.

Can I see your
editing portfolio?

This is a tough one because at the end of the day none of the images I edit belong to me; they are the photographer's.  I take a photographer's privacy very seriously and do not feel it appropriate to make it common knowledge that they are outsourcing. Also, since my job is to emulate another person's style, I would not want to include too many samples as the work I do is hugely varied and not my vision and it may not be your vision either.

But I get it! You want to be absolutely sure that I can edit your work and edit it well. This is why I offer all potential clients a free, no-obligation trial run of my services. See below.

YES! I offer all of my potential clients a free-of-charge trial run of 10-20 images. Since I am unable to show you a traditional portfolio, I think this is an absolutely crucial step when it comes to forming a new working partnership.

Do you offer test edits?

I am only able to work with photographers who edit their work using Lightroom Classic CC 7.0 and onwards. Unfortunately my system is unable to work with earlier releases and I do not work with Lightroom CC.

What version of Lightroom
do I need?

Do I have to shoot RAW?

The short answer is YES. RAW images are best for professional editing, especially when matching digital to film scans, as they have not yet been processed and contain an enormous amount of information that can be infinitely tweaked in Lightroom. On the other hand, JPEG images are enhanced in-camera. This is a destructive process whereby losing crucial information needed for editing at a professional level.

Do I need to credit you
as my editor?

Absolutely not! All of the images belong to you and the editing workflow is your vision. It is simply my job to match. I do not expect to be credited in any of your work.

Do your share your before and after work? Will my clients find out that I outsource my edits?

Again, no.  I totally get it. Outsourcing your editing is a big decision and one that can make professional photographers a little uncomfortable that their integrity has been compromised. I will never share your work on social media or on my website without your written consent to do so. If you jump to question 10, this is one reason why I don't have a traditional portfolio on my website.

I specialize in editing the following:

  1. Weddings

  2. Engagements

  3. Elopements

  4. Anniversaries

  5. Couples sessions

What photographic
genres do you edit?

Yes. I would be happy to work with you to sift, sort and cull your images. My standard rate for this service is .10¢ (USD) per image. We can discuss further during the initial consultation.

Do you cull images?

Unfortunately no. Lightroom is my primary tool for editing, and while I can remove tiny distractions using the “healing” brush, I am unable to perform major image manipulation nor in-depth retouching. My overall approach to photography is natural and real and I like to work with other photographers who feel the same.
